Built on war rubble, made of concrete and steel, Teufelsberg, the ex U.S. Spy Station is a wholly masculine place. By becoming part of it “The pilgrimage of the 13 Blood Moons” introduces the missing complementary opposite: feminine energy. According to the law of polarity, similar to the principle of the Anima and Animus by Carl Jung, or the Yin and Yang principle, all things contain their opposite.
Everything has both, masculine and feminine components. In Creation myths from all over the planet, it is the Androgynous - Divine who created the world.... Seen from such perspective, this hill could now be considered whole, achieving a sort of balanced equilibrium.
During the cold war, inside this very room where the installation is currently exhibited, secret documents used to be destroyed. By cooking them with water and chemicals in those giant phallus-shaped containers, the files were turned into papier-maché. Mainly made from paper 'The Pilgrimage of the 13 Blood Moons', could have been made of this secret document-papier maché, its energy though, would probably have been slightly different then!
In the installation, the eye window of the soul also reprents a Yoni: the Yoni (Sanskrit: योनि origin, source, vulva, uterus), is a stylized representation of the female genitals and symbol of the feminine energy, the Shakti, in hinduism. In the context of Teufelsberg, this could also be perceived as something entirely more sinister - an all-seeing eye of surveillance: Big Brother is watching you!
